Glen Keane Draws the Beast
Glen Keane, the master animator from "back in the day", drew this sketch of the Beast during a recent lecture at CalArts. I'm amazed with his precision and speed, something that can only come after years of honing your craft.
Credit goes to Seward Street for bringing this to my attention.
Will, that's a great video, thanks for posting it. You are correct when you point out that Keane is working very fast and loose as the result of years of drawing and great self confidence in his technique. But in addition there is the result of repetition that comes from the fact that he has drawn that character and perhaps even that pose many hundreds if not thousands of times. Many new students think that they can draw a character once or twice an that's all that is needed but professionals typically draw a character hundreds of times before they feel comfortable working with the character. It is an evolutionary process. Also Keane is a master of "life drawing" and that significantly shows in his work. Every shape and every line is tied to a physical reality and not just a line or mark on the paper. I constantly remind myself as I draw, "bones, muscles, and skin" as a way of remembering that behind each pencil stroke there is a physical reality even in a cartoon character.
