Toon Boom Computer Arts Article

January 17, 2008

I'm happy to report that my first article of any kind has been published in a magazine. Computer Arts Magazine contacted me in November and asked if I'd be interested in writing an article for them about Toon Boom.

While I'm not allowed to reprint any of the article here, it's meant to be a nice introduction of Toon Boom 4 for users with a fair amount of technical expertise. Perhaps they'll download the trial version of Toon Boom and find it meets their needs. I suspect that these users are highly influential, so it would be a great achievement if they joined our ranks.

The article specifically shows you how to create a walk cycle in Toon Boom. Nothing too basic or advanced, a nice taste of the program.

Thank you to JK and Marty for reviewing the copy and making sure it was intelligible.

Oh hey thats great! I've never seen the magazine so I'm going to assume we don't get it in Australia. (HUMBUG) Now we wait for the day CalicoMonkey.com has its own article! I bought ToonBoom Studio 4 a while back, after running out my free trial, and decided that it was something I should go for, I took the final plunge and purchased it, even though its been a while, i'm still having trouble making the change, sadly I'm still stuck in the Flash interface, I see similarities that, when I try to use them, AREN'T REALLY THE SAME AT ALL! >.< I'm the idiot who bought it I guess, it was the heat of the moment! But I will succeed, I think that if someone, who in my opinion is a fantastic animator, can devote his website to the software, it must be worth it. Though my Graphics tablet has reached the end of its run, so I haven't had a go of the software in a while. I'll get there, I really just haven't devoted the time to learning it properly. Matthewb

This is the second time I've typed this out, for some reason when I hit submit the page refreshed but my comment wasn't added. I'm doing this tutorial http://calicomonkey.com/blog/computer-arts-article.php#comments I get up to the animating part, I've done everything by what the tutorial says. What happens is, I add the keyframes etc, but when I move the torso up on the frames which you've said, the torso is up on every frame in the layer. Also only the torso moves (Unsure if I'm supposed to move each element individually) I downloaded the part that goes with this part of the tutorial but I still could not define the problem. Do you have any suggestions?

Embarissingly I've acted to hastily. I assumed I was viewing the Camera view, but of course I did not even have the camera view window open. I'm terribly sorry.

No worries Matthew. If you get stuck again, the fastest way to reach me is via email (which you have), or the contact me form. I only check the comments once a day or so.
