Burning Safari
Gobelins is the name of a French animation company that's doing some really quality work. They have a clean style and a stellar sense of pacing, so it's no wonder their cartoons are featured in prominent international animation film festivals like Annecy.
Here's their short film, called "Burning Safari". I think you'll come to expect even more amazing things from them, as I do.
Now Will, i'm sure you've talked about this before but i have forgotten; Whats your favourite and least favourite animation styles? 2D - (My favourite) Now there's cell animation, or computer generated (Flash, ToonBoom etc) And what do you think of rotoscoping? When i say that i'm more focused on the old Fleisher cartoons. (Superman Etc) CGI - (My least favourite) The way Animation studios are pumping out CGI's, and they're constant decrease in quality (Sure, the animation is improving, but everything else that makes a movie is going down hill)...I guess i'm getting a bit tired of them, honestly i wish they'd start making more 2D animated films...Thank GOD for The Simpsons movie...However Rat-a-too-ee was was an exception, that movie is great. Stop Motion - Now when i say that, i mean Clay Animations etc. I like them, but i guess its like my favourite food, i literally can't get enough of it, until i start eating it constantly and its not longer tasteful. (CGI for example) They're long tedious things to create, but they're always a work of art when completed. The last one i saw was Wallace and Gromit, and that was a great film. I think thats what i wanted to ask...Sorry if you've talked about this before. I'm quite tired, so sorry about any spelling and grammer errors. -Matthewb
Sorry, i'll just clarify that what i just posted is my opinion, and i'm open to peoples feelings on the matter. Also so far, all animations that you've displayed in your blogs (including the one in this blog article) are all top notch, and they are exceptions to my thoughts on CGI.
Lots of questions, I'll do my best to answer them all.
For the internet I do prefer Toon Boom and Flash. The nature of the web dictates that those formats will prevail over the more detailed 3D works.
As for film, I think I do prefer CGI. However, I may just be influenced by the quality that Pixar has been putting out. I love Wallace and Gromit, of course, but even Aardman has been making great strides in CGI work.
I think rotoscoping is a bit like motion capture. I've mentioned before that motion capture is cheating. That being said, both rotoscoping and motion capture do have their place. Just not at the Academy Awards!
First, I really like this piece, great pacing and timing and really fun to watch. And I'll have to look for more from these folks because this piece was excellent. Second, although there are grounds for artistic differences in style and techniques, the true test of any work is how it is received by the audience. How something is made never trumps how it is perceived by the audience. Crap is crap and a diamond is a diamond. Just my opinion.

Calico Monkey discusses animation programs, cartoon software and the art of making your own cartoons. Occasionally I release a new cartoon that has inadvertently made somebody chuckle. Such an outburst is purely accidental, I assure you. All animations were created with Toon Boom.
